What is turmeric?

Turmeric is a yellow color spice. In market, turmeric is available in form of powder and turmeric supplements in form of capsules. This is extracted from Rhizome called Curcuma longa, belongs to family – Zingiberaceae. The roots are used for cooking. Plants are gathered each year for their rhizomes, some for propagation in the following season and some for consumption. These are perennial, rhizomatous and herbaceous plants. The rhizomes are used fresh or boiled in water and sun dried, after which they are ground into a deep orange-yellow powder commonly used in coloring and as a flavoring agent in many Asian cuisines, especially for curries, as well as for dyeing. Turmeric powder has a warm, bitter, black pepper-like flavor and earthy, mustard-like aroma. It has many benefits, it can used for many purposes. It also has few side effects.

Turmeric is a flowering plant. It is commonly used as spice. It is one of the main spice in Indian, Pakistani, Bangladeshi, Nepali cuisine. It gives yellow color to food. Curcumin is the main active ingredient present in turmeric. It has very strong anti-oxidant. Turmeric also has anti-inflammatory substance. Whole Turmeric

Curcuma aromatica which is known for fine odor. This color turmeric is close to cooking turmeric. It is widely used as natural cosmetics to apply on skin. It has bitter taste so it is avoided for cooking.

Curcumin longa which is prepared by boiling the whole roots in water, sun dried and then powder is prepared. This turmeric powder is used for cooking purposes.

Black turmeric is rare variety and roots are slightly black in color. These are used for medicinal purposes. Tree manjal, this is a kind of vine and generally used for medical preparations.

Raw Turmeric
